Tour Bus Crashes After Trip to Disney World

A charter bus on its way back to Houston from a trip to Walt Disney World crashed in Alabama. The bus accident had several victims, and they were transported to a Pensacola hospital.

The crash occurred at about 5:30 a.m. on I-10 near exit 57. The bus ended up in a ravine that is approximately 60-feet deep. The bus was carrying approximately 45 students, who had taken a spring break trip. The students were part of a high school band, and between 12 and 20 of them were injured. The driver of the bus died in the crash.

rappel rescueOne of the injuries sustained in the crash was considered to be critical and five were serious. Responders had to rappel into the ravine to pull victims out of the bus. A band teacher reported feeling a bump and then everything went black. The band director had the most serious injuries and was trapped inside the vehicle for over three hours.

Following the transport of 46 victims to hospitals in both Alabama and Pensacola, Florida, only eight remained hospitalized. Two victims in Pensacola were listed in serious condition and three were listed in good condition.

The reason for the crash was not immediately apparent.
