Common Injuries from Motorcycle Accidents in Florida

Motorcycle riding is fun and exhilarating. But riding is dangerous as well. Drivers seem to be more careless than ever before. Their carelessness puts riders at risk. According to recent statistics, motorcycles in Florida represent only 3% of all registered motor vehicles in the state. Motorcycles only accounted for 2% of all auto accidents in Florida within the last five years. Notwithstanding, 17% of all motor vehicle fatalities within the previous five years involved motorcycle riders.

Motorcycles have enough power and maneuverability to avoid collisions if possible. But motorcycle manufacturers do not produce their bikes to survive a crash. As a result, riders will likely sustain severe trauma from striking another vehicle and hitting the ground.

Although the severity of injuries will vary depending on several factors, common motorcycle accident injuries include:

  • Head injuries such as traumatic brain injuries, concussion, skull fractures, and lacerations;
  • Face and neck trauma like broken cheekbones, broken orbital bones, dental injuries, and eye damage;
  • Thoracic injuries like broken ribs, broken sternum, and punctured or deflated lungs;
  • Spinal cord injuries including paralysis, fractured vertebrae, and ruptured discs;
  • Abdominal injuries including ruptured organs, bruised organs, and lacerations;
  • Musculoskeletal injuries like broken bones, amputated limbs, torn muscles; and
  • Skin injuries like scars, road rash, cuts, and bruises.

Motorcycle accident victims often sustain numerous injuries in a crash, even when wearing a helmet.

Does Age Play a Role in Motorcycle Accident Injuries?

Medical investigators performed a study of motorcycle riders hospitalized after crashes. The study looked at the type of injury the rider suffered in correlation to the rider’s age. The researchers limited the analysis to crashes in which the rider survived long enough for the hospital to admit them for treatment. Nonetheless, it is instructive.

The research suggests that older riders, i.e., those 40 years of age or older, ride larger and more powerful motorcycles than younger riders. However, older riders were more likely to wear a helmet.

The crash patterns were different for older riders too. Older riders showed they are more prone to rolling over and striking objects like bridge abutments, fences, and embankments. These crashes led to chest injuries such as deflated lungs and broken ribs. Researchers determined that the number of broken ribs correlates to a greater number of injuries to internal organs.

Despite wearing helmets more often, older riders are twice as likely to die from a head injury than younger riders. Additionally, older riders are more susceptible to suffering abdominal injuries.

Younger riders were more likely to be admitted to the hospital. However, younger riders are less likely to suffer a thoracic or abdominal injury. The difference might be explained by changes in an older person’s bone structure rather than the nature of the crash.
