What is a closed head injury?

A traumatic brain injury may be labeled a closed head injury by medical personnel. A closed head injury occurs when there is damage to the brain but the skull and dura mater remain intact and “normal.” More than 50 percent of all head injuries in the country are diagnosed as closed.

A closed head injury is most commonly caused by a vehicle accident. They are also caused by sports injuries and slip and fall accidents. While a closed head injury is serious for people of any age, children are the most likely to experience fatality. Men are more likely to fall victim to this type of injury than women. The most common types of closed head injury diagnosed are intracranial hematoma, diffuse axonal injury, concussion and cerebral contusion.

A fracture to the femur is painful. Symptoms may include pain, swelling, immobility, bleeding and deformity. The leg can be rendered unusable due to pain and a loss of stability. It is unusual for a fractured femur to be the only outcome of a vehicle accident. Because the bone is so difficult to break, it takes a very serious accident and one that typically causes injury to other parts of the body.

When a person suffers a closed head injury, they may experience headaches, slurred speech, dizziness, nausea and vomiting. The symptoms can appear immediately but, in some cases, may take weeks to appear following the injury. Symptoms do not always appear quickly because the brain swells slowly, causing symptoms that may not be acute.

When a person has struck their head or had some type of trauma to the head or face, they should seek a professional exam by a physician. The faster a brain injury is diagnosed, the better the chance for a positive outcome. If you have been diagnosed with a closed head injury and suffered financially as a result, you may be entitled to compensation from the at-fault party.
