A man woke up on the lawn of a person he didn’t know early in May. He discovered that he was severely injured. According to reports, the man had been traveling at about 60 mph through Crestview. He lost control of his motorcycle maneuvering around a curve and crashed into someone’s front lawn.

The man says that he didn’t understand the full weight of the situation until he was on a helicopter bound for the trauma unit at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. The man suffered several serious injuries: three broken ribs, a burst disc in his back, three fractured discs, more than one compound fracture in his collarbone and a shattered shoulder blade.

The exact reason the man lost control is still unknown, but he assumes he was traveling too fast. Today, he says that he is lucky to be standing and talking. He is crediting his safety gear for saving his life. At the time of his accident, the man was wearing a reinforced jacket, Kevlar riding jeans, steel-toed shoes and a helmet.

According to statistics, 20 percent of motor vehicle fatalities within the state involve motorcycles. Any person over the age of 21 in the state who chooses to ride a motorcycle without a helmet must carry at least $10,000 in medical benefits with their insurance policy.
