What is a spinal injury?

Whether you live in Florida or elsewhere, a spinal injury is most likely to occur when you are in some type of accident. Most commonly, these injuries occur as the result of a vehicle accident or a slip and fall. In some cases, a spinal injury may occur on the football field, basketball court or other sport’s field.

A spinal cord injury involves the injury of any nerve in or section of the spinal cord. In some cases, the injuries are minor and the victim recovers quickly. In other cases, the damage is severe and its consequences lifelong. When a person suffers a spinal cord injury, the areas below the point of injury are affected.

A person with a spinal cord injury may hold their head in an unusual position. They may experience numbness or tingling in various parts of their body, and they may find it difficult or impossible to walk on their own. Other symptoms of a spinal cord injury include neck pain, shock, the loss of consciousness and loss of control to the bladder and bowels.

If it is believed that a person may have sustained a spinal cord injury, it is important that they receive medical attention as soon as possible. That person should be kept still until they can be attended to by emergency services or other medical personnel. If you suspect that you may have suffered a spinal cord injury as the result of an accident in Pensacola, an experienced attorney can help you determine if you have a right to compensation.
