Blue light flasher atop of a police car. City lights on the background. The Florida Highway Patrol publicly released a video that shows the a collision that left two troopers injured in Pensacola late in May. The troopers were conducting a traffic stop at the time of the crash, and both troopers were treated for injuries and released from the hospital.

The video shows the incident that occurred just after 3 a.m. A trooper witnessed a vehicle being driven by a man. Due to the way the car was traveling, the trooper believed the driver to be intoxicated and initiated a traffic stop. The stop occurred on U.S. 29 close to Murphy Lane.

Once the trooper had the vehicle pulled over, a second trooper and a deputy from Escambia County Sheriff’s Office arrived to assist. As the officers were investigating the original stop, a second vehicle, driven by a 32-year old man failed to yield to the scene. He hit the deputy’s patrol car. The patrol car was pushed into the first trooper’s vehicle with the trooper inside. The cruiser then struck the second trooper who was conducting a search of the suspected DUI vehicle.

The man who struck the patrol car was ultimately charged with felony DUI with serious bodily injuries, reckless driving, felony driving while license suspended, failure to register a vehicle, no proof of insurance and DUI property damage. The original suspect was also hospitalized with injuries resulting from the accident. He was not charged immediately as officers were waiting for results of a blood test taken at the hospital.
